AI Rewrite
Rewrite a draft in your own voice
A draft can say the right things and still not sound like you. AI Rewrite reads a sample of your own writing and gives the draft back in that voice, for you to check before you use it.
Why drafts stop sounding like you
A lot of what we send starts somewhere else: an outline from a chatbot, a template, a colleague's version, notes you wrote in a hurry. The facts are fine, but the phrasing is not yours. It is too formal, or too eager, or full of words you would never use, and the people who know you can tell.
Fixing that by hand means going line by line, swapping in the words you would actually pick. AI Rewrite does that first pass for you, using your own writing as the reference rather than a generic "friendly" or "professional" tone.
How it works
- Add a writing sample once. Open the Typist side panel, choose Rewrite, and paste at least 100 words you wrote yourself: an email, a post, a few paragraphs of an essay. The panel counts the words as you go. The sample is saved on your device, so you only do this once.
- Paste the draft. Anything up to 4,000 characters, roughly 700 words. If the text is already in Typist's main box, "from Typist box" copies it across.
- Press Rewrite. A progress bar shows the wait: a few seconds for a short message, around 20 to 25 seconds for a draft at the limit. You can cancel at any point.
- Review it. Read the rewrite on its own, or switch to Changes to see exactly which words were replaced. Then Accept it into the draft, Copy it, or Discard it.
If you want the result typed into a page rather than pasted, "use in Typist" puts it in the main box, ready to type at the speed you choose. See how to type text automatically.
Getting a good result
- Use writing that is really yours. The sample is the whole point. Something you wrote quickly and naturally works better than something heavily polished or edited by someone else.
- Match the kind of writing. If the draft is an email, a sample of your emails gives a closer match than an essay does.
- Give it more than the minimum. 100 words is enough to start; a few hundred gives the model more of your habits to work from.
- Read the Changes view. A rewrite is a suggestion. It can get a fact, a name or a number wrong, or drop something. Check it before you send it.
What happens to your text
Sent only when you press Rewrite
Your writing sample is stored in the extension on your own device, not on our server. When you press Rewrite, the draft and the sample go through Typist's server to DeepInfra, which runs the AI model, and the rewrite comes back to the panel. We do not save the text or write it to our logs, and DeepInfra's terms say it does not keep it or train on it. Nothing is sent until you press the button.
The full detail, including what record is kept of each rewrite, is on the privacy page.
Plans
Every account gets one rewrite to try. Pro is $4.99 a month and includes unlimited rewrites under a fair-use limit of 50 a day, which resets at 00:00 UTC, along with unlimited typing and snippets. A rewrite counts when one comes back to you, whether you keep it or not; one that fails is not counted. The pricing page has the rest.
One free rewrite on every account. A Google sign-in is required.
Questions
- How much of my own writing does it need?
- At least 100 words, and up to 6,000 characters. More is better, as long as it is genuinely yours and written the way you normally write.
- How long can the draft be?
- Up to 4,000 characters, which is roughly 700 words. A short message comes back in a few seconds; a draft at the limit takes around 20 to 25 seconds.
- Is my text stored?
- Your writing sample is saved in the extension on your own device so you do not have to paste it again. When you press Rewrite, the draft and the sample go through Typist's server to DeepInfra, which runs the AI model. Neither Typist nor DeepInfra keeps that text once the rewrite is returned.
- Does a discarded rewrite still count?
- Yes. A rewrite counts when one comes back, whatever you do with it afterwards. A rewrite that fails is not counted.
- Is it free?
- Every account gets one rewrite to try. Pro, at $4.99 a month, includes unlimited rewrites under a fair-use limit of 50 a day.
